University Desktop Grid supported by cloud resources

One of the most typical scenarios that fits to the requirements of scientists on universities is to execute jobs on a private (i.e. resources owned by the university) desktop grid combined with cloud resources. This scenario provides

  • an easy-to-install SZTAKI-BOINC package to schedule the incoming workunits among the attached BOINC clients
  • a 3G Bridge component to ease the handling of jobs submitted externally
  • a MetaJob plugin to handle the submission of multiple jobs
  • a GBAC virtualization framework (deployed as BOINC application) to enable the execution of non-registered linux binaries
  • a comfortable web-based graphical portal, called gUSE, to ease the submission of jobs and complex applications like scientific workflows
  • the possibility to dynamically attach cloud resources to the BOINC project on demand

In order to realise this scenario, perform the following steps:

  1. Setup a SZTAKI-BOINC server based on this manual
  2. Install the 3G Bridge component based on this manual
  3. Configure the DC-API plugin of 3G Bridge
  4. Configure the WS-SOAP interface of 3G Bridge based on this manual
  5. Optionally, configure the MetaJob plugin for 3G Bridge
  6. Deploy the GBAC virtualisation framework based on this manual
  7. Install the gUSE portal and configure it against the WS-SOAP interface of your DG project
  8. Deploy the BOINC client image on your cloud
  9. Configure the Cloud plugin based on this manual

NOTE: this scenario differs in only the two last steps compared to the University DG scenario.

As a result, you will have a full-featured BOINC project enhanced with the submission mechanism provided by 3G Bridge through its plugins. DC-API plugin will handle the individual workunits in the BOINC project, while the MetaJob plugin will enable the user to submit huge number of jobs in one turn. GBAC will enable the execution of non-registered applications in the BOINC project. You desktop grid will also be augmented with cloud resources in case it is needed. Finally, with gUSE the submission of jobs and workflows is enhanced by a graphical portal. For more details, please read the relevant descriptions and manuals.
